Dodworth Colliery was Founded in 1836. It has enjoyed 190 years of making music, and during the late eighties and into the nineties, became one of the elite championship bands in South Yorkshire, gaining a worldwide reputation for its entertainment programmes.
 

The band like many other bands suffered a decline following the closure of the Colliery, however, the band re-established itself, following the beginning of the millennial period, and continues to improve and strengthen, which shows in our extensive entertaining programmes we give to the public not just in South Yorkshire but as far away as London!

We are a very friendly band and always welcome new players even if we have a full band!  We regularly have 20+ at rehearsals

Of course we recognise that in this modern era, there are many commitments that we all have, so will support our players to have an enjoyable experience.

We rehearse in our own bandroom Mondays and Thursdays, and have excellent facilities, including our own Welfare club, in which a well earned drink is always welcomed after a rehearsal!

The band aims in 2025, to re-establish the training band and support adult learners including those wishing to return to banding (without needing to make full committments - flexible rehearsal attendance, non-contesting positions available) to our organisation which was interrupted due to the COVID outbreak. But our long term aim is to get the band back to where it belongs, a journey our members are committed to achieving, thus securing the long term future of our historic organisation.

Dodworth Colliery MW Brass Band launches new Leadership Structure and Trainee Conductor Development Initiative

Dodworth Colliery MW Brass Band is proud to announce a significant step forward in their musical journey, with emphasis on development in all aspects of our organisation, whilst strengthening both playing and leadership roles.
At the heart of this exciting new venture are respected Musical Directors, Adam Whittle and Charlie Brammer.

Adam Whittle will assume the role of Musical Director with a clear focus on band development and contesting ambitions. He will provide once monthly development sessions, working closely with the band to enhance individual performance, ensemble cohesion and overall musicality. Working with our Resident and Trainee conductors, he will also prepare and direct the bands competitive performances throughout the year.

Charlie Brammer will assume the role of Resident Conductor, developing the bands concert performances, ensuring continued development and overseeing our new Conductor Development Programme.

During his teacher career, Charlie was always keen to develop students understanding of composition and arranging. This new programme will develop these and other skills in a practical, hands on learning experience designed to support and nurture the future conductors of our movement.

The band is also delighted to highlight the success of its Dodworth Junior Band, developed in partnership with St John’s Primary School, Dodworth, with young musicians playing together since September 2025 and already taking to the stage at the Christmas concert and again in June 2026.

Working alongside both Adam and Charlie, aspiring conductors will follow a structured pathway, with increasing time in front of the band, with a view to achieving a full time conducting position within our organisation.
